Digital Photo Storage Options for your Pink Digital Camera

With the steady drop in price of memory cards over the past couple years it’s becoming increasingly common for people to use them as permanent media storage options. It may seem convenient to use these high capacity cards as your sole source of storage, but there are many drawbacks that must be considered. It’s true that keeping your images stored on memory cards is easy, but that is where the benefits end. Due to the small size of the average pink digital camera, these cards must be small and thin, which also makes them easy to lose and easy for others to steal. I can speak from experience that losing a full memory card of important images can be devastating, particularly when the images contained within the card are irreplaceable, as most images are. Fortunately, there are a multitude of secure options that will allow you to use and keep your images in their original format for years to come.

Perhaps the most obvious and commonly used method for storing digital photos is on an internal or external hard drive. While larger stationary hard drives are prone to errors in the same way that smaller memory cards are, one of the main benefits to using these drives is that they are not easily misplaced and are unlikely to be stolen. Since these drives are attached to your computer they can also be used to organize photos into specific folders. The option also exists for photos to be edited and saved in their new (and original) format. To mitigate the risk of hard drive failure, it’s recommended that images also be stored on another format, of which there are many.

Most computers purchased in the past 3-5 years come equipped with a CD or DVD burner – or both. Transferring your images to a CD or DVD is an inexpensive and relatively simple option to avoid the risk associated with using a hard drive as the sole source of storage. To make the process even easier, there are software programs available that can be used to quickly transfer files to the media of your choice. For those that don’t have access to a CD or DVD burner on their computer, an external CD burner or replacement CD drive with burning capability can be purchased for a reasonable price.

One of the up and coming options for photo and file storage are online back-up services. These services charge a monthly or yearly fee to automatically back up the files contained on your computer. The files are stored on the company’s servers and can be used to repopulate a failed hard drive. I have been a subscriber to one of these services for the past year and really like the convenience factor, though the service is not perfect. It doesn’t back up all files automatically, requiring the user to specify file types. The process is also very time consuming, taking several days or weeks to transfer all of the files depending upon the original volume of the drive.
